THE HONEST INSPECTION GUIDE
What You Actually Need to Know
MA inspections cover two things: safety and emissions.
On the safety side, inspectors check your lights and signals, brakes, steering and suspension, tires, wipers, horn, mirrors, and seatbelts. On the emissions side, your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system (OBD) gets checked to make sure nothing’s flagging.
The whole process usually takes 15–20 minutes.
You’ll get a rejection sticker — and an honest explanation of what needs to be fixed. We won’t hand you a list of repairs and disappear. We’ll walk you through what’s required to pass, what’s genuinely urgent, and what your options are.
If it’s something straightforward — a burned-out bulb, a wiper blade — we can usually take care of it on the spot.
- Every year, within your birth month (for most registered vehicles)
- Within 7 days of moving to Massachusetts from another state
- Before or shortly after buying a used car — this one’s worth doing before you buy, actually. See our Pre-Purchase Inspections.
Don’t wait until the last minute if your registration is up — an expired sticker is a moving violation in Massachusetts.
A lit check engine light is an automatic inspection fail in Massachusetts. If your light is on, it’s worth getting a diagnostic scan before you come in for the sticker — otherwise you’re likely looking at a rejection.
McCracken Express Tech at 145 Spring St offers free diagnostic code scans. Come see us there first, we’ll tell you what the light means and whether it’s something that needs to be fixed before inspection
After, if the repair is related to something that would fail. If you’re not sure, call us — we’ll give you a straight answer before you come in.
Need your sticker before the weekend? Come in Saturday morning — we open at 8. Walk-ins welcome. (617) 323-9652
