THE HONEST OIL CHANGE GUIDE

What You Actually Need to Know

Here’s Jason’s take: ignore the old “every 3,000 miles” rule — it’s outdated for most modern vehicles. The right answer depends on your car, how you drive, and what oil you’re using.

  • Conventional oil: Every 3,000–5,000 miles, especially if you’re doing a lot of city driving with frequent stop-and-go
  • Synthetic oil: Every 7,500–10,000 miles for most vehicles
  • Best advice: Check your owner’s manual. Your manufacturer knows your engine better than any rule of thumb does.

One thing we do see: Toyotas, Subarus, and Kias that go too long between changes start building up oil sludge in the passages. It’s an easy problem to avoid — and an expensive one to fix once it’s there.

Probably, if your car is newer than 2010. Most manufacturers — Audi, BMW, Subaru, and others — require it. Synthetic flows faster through a cold engine, which matters most in those first 30–60 seconds after startup when most engine wear actually happens.

It costs more than conventional. It’s worth it.

When you come in, we’re not just swapping oil. We’ll do a visual check of your fluid levels, filters, and anything that looks like it needs attention. If we see something, we’ll tell you — and we’ll tell you whether it’s urgent or whether it can wait.

That’s how we’ve always done it.
