Oil changes are one of the most routine, yet least understood, of all the basic maintenance services performed over the lifetime of a car. It’s also the most important. That said, we wanted to take the time to answer a few of the most common oil change related questions we’re asked by customers.
Is it Important?
YES! With all the high tech advances in the automotive industry, the trade off is that the complex engines of today’s cars aren’t nearly as tolerant as those resilient beasts from 15 years ago. With this in mind, the phrase “Well Oiled Machine” isn’t just another meaningless expression. Access to clean oil is crucial to cars of today to make sure the tighter spaces remain well lubricated.
90%of engine wear happens within the first 30-60 seconds of starting your car.
While your car was sitting overnight, the oil drained down to the bottom. So when the engine starts, the oil pump recirculates that oil back to the top of the engine. The faster the oil gets back to the top to resume its job of lubricating the parts of your engine, the better. Otherwise you’ve got metal on metal with no lubrication.
What’s So Great About Synthetic?
Imagine two jars of marbles. The first jar is filled with small, glass marbles of perfectly uniform size. The second jar is a jumble of marbles of all different sizes. When you pour them through a funnel, which one pours faster? The uniform molecules of the Synthetic oil makes a huge difference in the speed that the oil transfers from the oil pump to the top of the engine, and this efficiency helps with the initial start up engine wear. It lubricates more efficiently, which is why many manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, Subaru, etc. are requiring it in their newer models.
How Many Miles Can I Drive Between Oil Changes?
We get this question pretty much everyday. We’ve noticed a trend among Toyotas, Subarus and Kias, to name a few, where a buildup of oil sludge is creating problems. This is a direct effect of waiting too long between oil changes which causes the old, dirty oil to sludge up and cake on the oil passage walls.. If you do a lot of city driving with stop and going, we recommend changing it every 3,000-5,000. If you do more highway driving racking up miles you can go 7,500 (synthetic) or even 10,000 (Mobil1)
How Much?
How many miles does your vehicle’s manufacturer recommend you drive between oil changes? For example, Subaru recommends five-thousand mile intervals between oil changes using Synthetic motor oil. Older vehicles that don’t see many miles will do fine with the standard three-thousand mile service using regular motor oil, So it’sup to you But the shorter the miles the better, and synthetic oil and Mobil 1 DO cost more, but they really are better.
